Keweenaw Wild Ones and friends are invited to a walk into a restored shoreline at 10 a.m., Sunday, Aug. , near the Ojibway Campground in Baraga.
The restoration was conducted by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, which covered 2-1/2 miles of barren stamp sands with luxurious native vegetation. Our visit will be led by KBIC ecologist Karena Schmidt.
After the walk, Wild Ones and guests can head over to WOK member David Hunter’s native plant nursery, Kismet Gardens, located at 14500 Korhonen Road, Baraga, MI 49908. (Easy to find with GPS.) We’ll tour his grounds, check out the nursery, and offer suggestions.

Here’s how to get to the shoreline restoration from Houghton:
- Drive toward Baraga on U.S. 41.
- About a half mile past The Pines gas station and convenience center, you’ll see a white arrow and sign for the Ojibway Campground on the left. Turn left here.
- Drive until you reach a fork in the road. Take the left fork.
- The road leads to the restoration area. It will turn to gravel and veer right before you get there.
