Fall Plant Sale Is Up and Running

We’ve got our fall sale going, and it features some neat plants, including prairie sage (left), Pennsylvania sedge, and some lovely penstemons. If you don’t know about penstemons (aka beardtongues—ugly name for beatiful plants), now’s your chance to delve into this delightful genus.

Wild Ones members and their guests are invited to visit a restored wetland near the Houghton County Memorial Airport. The site was recreated by our guide, Dr. Rodney Chimner, on behalf of Michigan Tech’s Keweenaw Research Center. We meet at KRC, located on Airpark Boulevard near the airport, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Attendance is limited; please register here.

FOLK Donates to Keweenaw Wild Ones

The Friends of the Land of Keweenaw, a local nonprofit that has worked tirelessly to protect our health and environment, has given $2,400 to WOK.

FOLK has recently disbanded, and they chose to give a portion of their assets to Wild Ones in recognition of our efforts to improve and protect the environment through support of native plants.

“We are so grateful for their donation and the vote of confidence it represents,” WOK president Marcia Goodrich said. “FOLK has done a tremendous amount of good in the Keweenaw, and it’s humbling to be chosen to help carry on that legacy,”

The WOK board is considering ways to use the donation that align with FOLK’s mission.

Volunteers Help Install New Native Garden at Keweenaw Co-op

On Sunday, August 17, a gang of KISMA volunteers and Keweenaw Wild Ones spread mountains of sand, wood chips, and decorative rock to put the finishing touches on the Keweenaw Co-op’s new garden spot. Richardson Landscaping of Naubinway spearheaded the installation and designed the garden. WOK donated $1,218 toward the project.

Don’t Forget to Vote

The annual election to choose members of Keweenaw Wild Ones’ Board of Directors is in progress. If you haven’t alreaady voted, here’s a link to the ballot.

We encourage members to vote; the candidates have all stepped up to help drive our chapter forward. Since we don’t have a set number of seats on the board, directors who receive more yes than no votes will be seated. Terms begin at our annual meetiing, Sept. 16.
