Metamorphosis at Kestner Park
Wild One Craig Waddell reported on the history of Wild Ones’ garden at Kestner Waterfront Park, from its beginnings as an industrial site, to its transformation into a native demonstration garden, to its future, with a restored watershed and expanded plantings.
Thanks to all the many volunteers who have helped create this garden, with special appreciation to Craig and his wife, Vicky Bergvall, who have spearheaded the effort.
Symposium to Feature Heather Holm
Don’t miss the Ninth Annual Keweenaw Native Plant Symposium coming up Saturday, April 4. Renowned pollinator advocate Heather Holm will teach how to build “soft landings” under trees to protect bees and other beneficial insects.
We’ll learn how to control mosquitos and support beneficial insects from pollinator conservation expert Aaron Anderson of the Xerces Society.
And anyone who has ever watched helplessly as a tree wastes away in their yard will appreciate RJ LaVerne’s talk on planting the right tree in the right place.
This free symposium will be held
- 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, April 4
- Zoom

WOK Supporting Special Olympics
Keweenaw Wild Ones is donating a yard sign and a $30 gift certificate to the local Special Olympics Movie Night and Silent Auction, set for Saturday, April 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Orpheum in Hancock. Total value of the donation is $60.
This is a great opportunity to help a worthy organization and raise awareness of the value of native plants in the landscape.
WOK at the WAM Conference
WOK president Marcia Goodrich (in pink) attended the annual Wildflower Association of Michigan Conference March 8-9 to accept a $525 grant on behalf of the Hancock Trails Club. WOK member Roz Heideke applied for the funding, which will be used to establish a native planting at the new Maasto Hiito bike park.
In addition, Wild Ones President Loris Damerow called out the Keweenaw chapter a couple of times during her keynote address. Yay us!

Talking Plants, Drinking Wine April 25
A bunch of us got together March 14 to drink coffee, eat good food, and talk about plants and other things at Keweenaw Coffee Works, thanks to Sheri Hagwood and the Hospitality Committee. Next, the Hospitality Committee invites all WOK members to a get together at Beviamo Vino (the wine bar) in Houghton on Saturday, April 25, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.. You can enjoy a drink, snack, or just talk about native plants with fellow native plant enthusiasts.
