Millions of years of geological activity, climate history, and human influence have created one of the most spectacular floristic assemblages in the Upper Midwest, whose protection and recognition is now more important than ever.
In “Flora of Isle Royale,” botanist Abraham Stone will describe the ecological history of Michigan’s sole national park, highlight some of its lovely and peculiar flora, and discuss why, botanically, there’s no place in the world like Isle Royale.

About Abraham Stone
Abe Stone spent his first botanical years studying the flora of the Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale before joining the Michign Natural Features Inventory as a fulltime botanist in 2025.
He graduated from Michigan Technological University in 2024, where he conducted several research projects on plant-fungal interactions, invasive species biology, and the ecological structure of bedrock-influenced natural communities. He has since studied dunes, northern forests, and fire-dependent ecosystems.
Abe is an avid adventurer and enjoys long, grueling hikes in the northern corners of Michigan but also indulges in a skiing escape and quiet night at home, weather permitting.
