Free Pizza Sept. 15! (plus our annual meeting)
Keweenaw Wild Ones’ annual meeting is set for Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Orpheum/Fifth and Elm in Hancock. All members and their families are invited to come enjoy free pizza and soft drinks; a cash bar will be available.
This is a great chance to hang out with like-minded folks, enjoy the Orpheum’s excellent pizza, and maybe win a door prize.
Registration isn’t required, but it sure helps us plan, and you can also weigh in on your pizza preferences.
Potted
Fourteen gardeners gathered August 12 to try their hand at growing natives in containers. Jill Fisher, Sheri Hagwood, and Kear Backes advised, and WOK provided free potting mix and basic pots, though most people brought their own decorative containers. Plus, attendees received the membership discount on plant purchases.
Organizers said everyone had a really good time, so if you missed it, don’t fret. We’ll probably do it again next year.
Board Elections Coming Up
Members will soon receive ballots for our upcoming elections to the WOK Board of Directors. President Marcia Goodrich and Director David Hunter are running for reelection to three-year terms, which begin at our annual meeting, Sept. 15. You can learn more about them on our Meet the Board page.

- MSU Extension is holding the UP Smart Gardening Conference Sept. 12 in Marquette. Topics include Smart Gardening techniques to improve soil, eradicating invasive plants, decreasing runoff with rain gardens, and battling climate change in the Upper Peninsula. - Botanist Abe Stone will give a talk on “The Flora of Isle Royale” at 7 p.m., Oct. 20, in Room G002 of Michigan Tech’s Noblet Forestry Building. Put this on your calendar and arrive early. Abe is an amazing speaker.
- Michael Monfils, director of the Michigan Natural Features Inventory, will give a Zoom talk at 6 p.m. Tuesday,. Nov. 10, on the essential work MNFI does to study and preserve our state’s unique array of native plants and natural communities. Learn more and register here.
- Show Me, Help Me Days are planned for two new Wild Ones members. Donna Amici will host one at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, in Allouez, and Kim Goffinet’s will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, in Chassell. Members are invited to visit their properties and advise on possible landscaping strategies. Stay tuned for more information.
